Course overview

Our unique and exciting DJ skills certificate course is a comprehensive course designed for complete beginners or people looking to enhance their existing skills. We can teach you how to DJ whether you prefer to use traditional vinyl, cd's or increasingly popular mp3 format. You will learn on the very latest industry standard equipment including the Pioneer CDJ1000 cd decks, Pioneer CDJ1000 cd decks, Ableton 8, Serato Scratch Live, Pioneer and Vestax mixers and controllers to name a few.

This course is suitable for people who are either looking to DJ professionally or as an enjoyable hobby and you will receive practical hands on tuition from day one. You will learn about CD turntables, mixing mp3's, creating live set using Ableton, mixers, headphones, beat mixing and cueing, using filters and eq as well as the standard skills needed to mix in a bar or club. This course also aims to teach you the basic elements of music production and remixing and you will learn subjects such as using samples, making drum loops, creating basslines, song structures and integrating soundcards with the Ableton Live 8 software package.

You have the option of studying in a group of 4 or on a one to one basis. With the one to one course the structure and timetable is flexible where you are able to study during the daytime, evening and weekends. You can attend the course for two half days or one long day per week, it is also possible to accelerate and complete the course in just 2 weeks. The course is also very useful if you want advice on how to promote and run a club night in a professional manner. It is also particularly suitable for people who are thinking of purchasing a DJ production set up at home but have yet to decide on a package that would be the most suitable for their needs. Our tutors and advisors are able to offer informed and impartial advice that will help you choose the best combination of hardware and software to suit your budget.

Introduction

- what equipment and software is used by the modern DJ such as turntables, mixers, laptops and headphones

Music structure

- learn to count beats and bars and their relevance to mixing

Beat matching

- how to beat match, cueing and synchronizing two basic rhythms/beats together.

Mixing techniques

- blend one record into another in one seamless motion and using the faders, equalisers and filters

Effects

- making your set sound professional by using kill switches and applying effects such as reverb's and phasers

Mix CD production

- record and edit a mastered mix of your dj set using editing software such as Sony Soundforge

Audio/sound editing

- learn to trim and edit loops, samples, vocals and create bootlegs

Sampling

- creating drum loops, sound/drum libraries and the creative use of filters and time stretching

Song structure

- learn to structure songs successfully by understanding tempo, beats, bars, basslines, verses and choruses

Music production

- using software such as Ableton learn the tips and tricks on how to successfully write drum parts, basslines and melodies

Mixing and mastering

- learn the basics of mastering to fine tune your mixes and then produce a final cd master

Promotion

- learn how to promote yourself to get DJ work or run your own event

You can enroll on this course at anytime throughout the year on a one to one basis.

How long does the course last? One evening per week for 8 weeks for group courses. With practice time to selected by student. One to one course timetables are determined by the student. For example, most people attend the course for 2 days per week for 8 weeks but some people prefer to study for 1 long day per week for 8 weeks. Others prefer 2 long days for 4 weeks.

How many days? this is the student’s decision guided by our tutors (one to one course only). For example, most people attend the course for 2 days per week for 8 weeks but some people prefer to study for 1 long day per week for 8 weeks. Others prefer 2 long days for 4 weeks. Timetables are flexible and you are in control. If you would prefer to enrol on a group course you only attend the course for one day a week.

What time of the day do I attend the course? it’s your decision, we have morning, afternoon and evening slots in our timetable, we are open 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 12-5pm on weekends. Group courses are on Thursday evenings starting at 7pm and finishing at 10pm.

Can I change the content of the course? yes you can, the outline above is simply a guide. It's your course and you decide what subjects you want to learn with expert guidance from our experienced tutors (only available for one to one courses).

What's the cost? the course costs just £949 per student for one to one courses and £749 per student for group courses.

Can I pay in installments? unfortunately we are unable to offer payment plans at present.
